DID YOU KNOW? New York sports teams, the Yankees, and Giants trained at the Jersey Shore during World War II. According to the Asbury Park Press, on March 14, 1943, the Yankees arrived by train to Asbury Park and conducted spring training at Asbury Park High School on a newly constructed field. On the same day, the New York Giants’ train arrived in Lakewood with a field constructed by the team at the old John D. Rockefeller estate, which had become Ocean County Park in 1940, to serve as their home for the next three years.
